GT RGBW Rigid UCS2904 Chasing Strips (12V) | High-Output Lighting

Pushing automotive lighting development further, these semi-rigid UCS2904 strips are engineered for maximum performance. By utilizing a 12V architecture and a thickened PCB, these strips safely draw over 70% more power than traditional 5V options for unmatched brightness.

Technical Superiority & Upgrades

  • 12V Architecture: Operates directly on 12V DC, completely eliminating the need for a step-down transformer.
  • Externally Mounted UCS2904 IC Chips: Provides a huge step up in performance and reliability over standard internal-IC chips.
  • Maximum Brightness: Updated to feature a fuller output per chip, resulting in a significantly brighter and more uniform appearance.
  • Thermal Dissipation: The thicker PCB board acts as a heatsink, allowing for greater heat dissipation and sustained higher power consumption.

Reliability Features

  • Heat Sensitivity: While the rigid board dissipates heat efficiently, addressable LEDs are still sensitive to extreme temperatures. We strongly recommend wiring these to turn off when your 150°C+ low beams are active.
  • Power Management: All addressable LEDs have a small standby power drain. If the vehicle sits for more than a week, installing a master kill switch on the 12V+ line is recommended.

Physical Characteristics & Flex Profile

  • Dimensions: 8mm w x 24″ l (60cm).
  • Premium Wiring: Includes 1m of wiring protected by a braided tech-flex cover, terminating in a JST connection.
  • Inward/Backward Flex: These boards feature backward flexibility to follow standard mounting contours.
  • Lateral Constraints: Because of the thick, semi-rigid PCB design, these strips cannot be twisted from side to side.

Installation & Compatibility

  • Sold in Pairs: Each order includes two (2) rigid chasing strips.
  • Easier Soldering: The rigid PCB eliminates the risk of tearing solder pads off flimsy ribbons, giving you a solid surface to push against. (Max recommended iron temp is 260°C).
  • Cuttable: Can be cut and soldered to size every 3 LEDs.
  • Warranty Note (1-Year): The 1-year warranty is honored on cut strips. However, mandatory photos will be required for inspection before any resoldered strips are replaced.
  • Corrosion Warning: JST connections must be packed with dielectric grease and sealed with heat-shrink. Unprotected connections will corrode, draw excess power, and immediately void your warranty.
  • Controller Compatibility: Intended specifically for use with Blueghozt controllers, though other advanced controllers may work.

People Also Ask

Q: What is the main difference between the 12V Rigid UCS2904 strips and standard 5V chasing strips?
A: The 12V rigid strips utilize a thicker PCB that acts as a heatsink, allowing them to safely draw over 70% more power for a significantly brighter output. Additionally, they operate directly on 12V DC, meaning you do not need to install a step-down transformer like you do with 5V setups.

Q: Can I bend or twist the 12V rigid chasing strips during installation?
A: These boards are designed with backward flexibility so they can easily follow standard mounting contours. However, due to the thick, semi-rigid PCB design, they cannot be twisted from side to side.

Q: Are the 12V rigid LED strips easier to solder than flexible ribbons?
A: Yes. The thicker PCB provides a solid surface to push against, eliminating the common risk of tearing solder pads off the back of a flimsy ribbon when cutting and sizing your strips.

Q: Which LED controllers are compatible with the UCS2904 rigid strips?
A: These rigid chasing strips are currently intended to be used with Blueghozt controllers, as they are the most advanced on the market, though other high-end controllers may also work.

Q: Can your RGBW Chasing Halos be cut/trimmed?
A: Yes, if you’re very careful with very sharp snips, you can cut out a section of the halo. Ensure you cut on the correct side of the input wire. No warranty if cut.

Q: Are these road legal?
A: In Canada and the US, white DRL and amber turn signals are road legal. These halos include a dedicated white chip capable of producing a legal white DRL output. Always verify your local regulations, as installation configuration determines compliance — not the product itself.

Q: What LED sorting do your Chasing LED products use?
A: All our Chasing LED products use a GRBW LED sorting structure to ensure high compatibility, even with other brands.

Q: How bright are GT RGBW Chasing LEDs?
A: Brightness varies by installation. When mounted behind OEM acrylic diffusers, both 5V and 12V variants produce strong, even output. In direct sunlight without a diffuser, 5V strips may appear dim — the 12V UCS2904 rigid strips are the better choice for exposed, high-ambient-light installs.

Q: What’s the expected lifespan?
A: Exceptionally long under normal conditions. We ship complete custom headlight builds worldwide using these LEDs and trust them for long-term daily driver use. The most common causes of early failure are heat exposure from halogen bulbs or corroded JST connections — both preventable with proper installation.

Soldering Guide

Parts/Equipment

  1. A proper soldering station with temperature control is a must, we use this one by X-Tronic, available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B086624LXB/
    • The “5 Extra Tips” is what we’re after, although they can be bought separately. We use the Bevel Tip as its larger surface area allows for quicker heat transfer.

    • Ensure you also have soldering tip cleaner with rosin flux and continuously clean the tip when in use.
  1. Good solder (Bad solder will ruin your day). We use 2 different thickness solder. – Use max temp of 260c
    1. MG Chemicals Sn63/Pb37 (No 4865-227g) – 0.032″ Diameter, 22 Gauge, 2.2% Flux – https://a.co/d/09czWki
      • We use this to “prep” a pad by tinning it (pre-apply a small amount of solder), to easily accept a connecting wire or in our case a piece of 16 gauge solder.
    2. MG Chemicals Sn60/Pb40 (No 4898-227g) – 0.065″ Diameter, 16 Gauge – 2.2% Flux – https://a.co/d/9K4pctl
      • We use this to connect cut led strips where the distance is very small (under 1/2″)
      •  Warning: These both contain lead (Pb). It is important to use in a well-ventilated area at worst, with a forced air filter ideally
  2. Shoe Goo (Yes really) – https://a.co/d/e4qL7br
    • Once you’ve tested all your connection (connect to controller, power on, test all colours), apply a small amount to all connections, especially those bridging any sort of gap to help with vibration. Let cure fully. This is also removable later if necessary for repair.

In our product picture above, you can see the 16 gauge wire being used to bridge the 120-degree (ish) angle. It has not yet had Shoe Goo applied to it for a “cleaner” picture.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Cold Joint: Appears dull or cracked. Reheat and reapply the solder. (Do not blow to cool quicker)
  • Excess Solder: Use a desoldering pump or wick to remove it.
  • Oxidized Tip: Clean and re-tin the soldering iron regularly.

A good solder joint is shiny and smooth, without a sharp “peak”. Practice and take note of how long it takes to heat a pad to where it will melt solder. Just like when soldering 2 wires together, you want to heat the contact patch, and then dab the solder onto the pad/wires where it melts by contact with the pad, not the iron. Excess time on the pad could lead to the LEDs being exposed to too much heat and damage them (especially on thinner sk6812rgbw strips).

Addressable LED Information

  1. Addressable LEDs, as they’re formally known, go by many marketed names, for the most part, they all perform the same functions, with some distinct variables such as whether the led has a dedicated white chip (RGB vs RGBW). It’s important that your supplier (aka us) uses the highest quality components. The addressable industry came about less than 5 years ago, but leaps and bounds have been made in regard to chip quality. A few styles such as WS2811, and WS28212 have been around since the beginning and have been vastly outperformed in many aspects by others such as SK6812rgb(w), which is what we use for our 5V strips. Let’s not forget about important things such as chip count (typically expressed per meter), and fail-safes such as how we added extra resistors on everything strip to prevent voltage spikes from damaging the LEDs. Common Names for Addressable LEDs include; Neopixel, Colorflow, color flow, neoprism, chasing leds, automotive chasing leds.
  2. Addressable LEDs (the halos and strips themselves) have a small power drain even when off, regardless of the controller selected. If your car is driven daily, this should not affect you. If your car sits for a week+, consider installing a switch on the 12+ wire connecting to the battery (after the fuse).
  3. Addressable LEDs are sensitive to temperature, especially, say, a 150+ degree bulb. If you’d like to get the longest life possible out of your purchase, consider running your halos/strips only has a drl and have them turn off when your low beam is on.
